Spain's Renfe will evaluate the design of the canal bridge

The National Railway Secretariat hired Renfe's international arm directly, for $338,812, to review the feasibility of the conceptual design for the future railway bridge over the Panama Canal, a piece unique to the project.
Background & context
Of every engineering problem on this line, the crossing of the Panama Canal is the one with no local precedent, Panama has never built a railway bridge over its own canal. Renfe's international arm reviewing the conceptual design, rather than originating it, suggests the Secretaría already has a design and wants an independent check before going further, a normal, prudent sequence for a structure this consequential.
At $338,812, the contract is a rounding error next to the AECOM engineering deal, which tells you this is a narrow feasibility review, not a design contract. The output to watch for is whether Renfe's review comes back with a straightforward sign-off or flags requiring a redesign, the latter would be a meaningful schedule risk for Phase 1.
